A set of mathematical equations can help turn apparently random observations into a clock 鈥 and then measure its accuracy

Any random sequence of events, such as the lapping of ocean waves on the shore, can become a clock 鈥 and physicists have now devised a mathematical procedure for making such an odd timepiece and for measuring its precision.
