DAY 1: COLOMBO ARRIVAL
Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, transfer to the Galle Face Hotel.
Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital, is a city where charm meets tropical modernity. Bustling markets, leafy boulevards, and grand buildings sit alongside contemporary cafes, galleries, and high-rises. As the nation’s cultural and commercial hub, Colombo offers a fascinating first glimpse into Sri Lanka’s layered history and urban ecosystems. From coastal wetlands teeming with birdlife to century-old gardens and architectural landmarks, the city provides a dynamic backdrop to the start and end of your expedition.
After checking in to the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo, join your tour leader and expert in the evening for a welcome meal, where they will give you an expedition briefing.
DAY 2: COLOMBO TO KANDY
Today you will embark on a scenic drive to Kandy, a journey of approximately three hours that takes you through the heart of Sri Lanka’s lush and diverse landscapes. As you leave the coastal plains behind, the road begins to wind gently into the hill country, revealing panoramic views of emerald-green tea plantations, mist-draped valleys, and picturesque villages.
On arrival, visit the Udawattekele sanctuary, set in a serene forest reserve. The sanctuary was formerly known as Uda Wasala Watta, which translates to 'garden above the royal palace' in Sinhalese, this sanctuary boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It once served as a garden exclusively for Kandyan royalty, who used the forest pond for bathing, while the public was strictly prohibited from entering. The area was designated as a forest reserve in 1856 and later officially became a sanctuary in 1938.

DAY 3: KANDY ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS AND HUNNAS FALLS NIGHT SAFARI
This morning you will enjoy a guided visit of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya which are among the finest and most extensive in South Asia, sprawling across nearly 150 acres along the banks of the Mahaweli River. Originally conceived as a garden for Kandyan royalty in the 14th century, the gardens were later transformed into a botanical garden of global renown. One of the most beloved areas of the gardens, the Orchid House boasts over 300 varieties of orchids, from rare indigenous species to hybrid showstoppers in brilliant shades of purple, yellow, and white. Meet with a local botanist to take a guided tour of the Royal Botanical Gardens they will help you spot Yellow Fronted Barbets, Layards Parakeets and Sri Lankan Hanging Parrots, and introduce you to an unbelievable array of orchids.
Afterwards, visit a nearby tea factory for a guided tour to learn about the production of Sri Lanka's best-known beverage. Of course, you will also sample some of the delicious varieties of locally produced tea while you're here. Afterwards, head back to your hotel for free afternoon
In the evening, enjoy a night safari in the grounds of the Hunnas Falls Hotel which are nestled in the lush hills above Kandy. Explore the the surrounding forested landscape where when darkness sets in all the nocturnal animals can be seen wandering around. During this 2 hour safari, you will may catch a glimpse of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, owls, spiders, and insects said to be inhabiting the vicinity of Hunas Falls. Furthermore, keep your eyes peeled for the largest moth species and the largest spider species in Sri Lanka!
DAY 4: KANDY TO NUWARA ELIYA
Today you will be transferred to Nuwara Eliya. Situated deeper into tea plantation country, Nuwara Eliya sits at an elevation of 1800 metres making it one of the coolest regions in Sri Lanka. Once favoured by the Scottish and the English, remnants of the past can be seen in sculpted gardens and manor homes decorating the city. On arrival, explore the charming town at your own pace before heading to your accommodation which is tucked away among tea plantations and scenic hills.
This afternoon, visit the Hakgala Botanical Garden which boasts over 10,000 flowering plants, creating a stunning display during the spring months as the garden transforms from its usual green hues to a vibrant array of colors. Nestled in the hill country, the climate is perfect for western flowering plants, allowing exotic flora from China, Japan, Britain, and the Netherlands to thrive alongside native vegetation. Tall alpine trees stand next to equally tall palm trees, while English rose bushes compete for attention with a variety of orchids.
DAY 5: MORNING VISIT TO HORTON PLAINS NATIONAL PARK AND CONTINUE TO UDAWALAWE
In the early morning travel to Horton Plains National Park located in Ohiya. The misty plains are a treasure trove of diverse flora and fauna, featuring superb grassy trails for trekking and rivers that weave gracefully along the base of its cliffs.
Afterwards you will board a train from Pattipola to Ella. At over 1,897 meters above sea level, Pattipola is one of the highest points on the Sri Lankan railway network. It's a small, serene village known for its cool climate and tranquil beauty. Before departing, take a moment to breathe in the crisp mountain air and admire the surrounding pine forests and cloud forests typical of this altitude. From Ella you will be transferred to Udawalawe by the private vehicle.
Please note that train tickets are in very high demand, if we are unable to book them, you will continue your journey from Horton Plains National Park to Udawalawe by private vehicle.
DAY 6: UDAWALAWE NATIONAL PARK MORNING AND EVENING SAFARI
Today you will enjoy both a morning and evening safari in Udawalawe National Park.
Covering over 30,800 hectares, the Udawalawe National Park lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces. It was established in 1972 to provide a refuge for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. The park offers one of the best chances in all of Asia to see wild Asian elephants in their natural habitat. Unlike the denser jungles of other parks, Udawalawe’s open plains, scattered trees, and scrubland provide excellent visibility. Other wildlife regularly spotted here includes macaques and larger monkeys, spotted deer, crocodiles and sometimes even leopards.
DAY 7: UDAWALAWE TO SINHARAJA FOREST RESERVE
Drive to Deniyaya’s Sinharaja Forest Reserve where you will spend the day relaxing in the beautiful surroundings. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sinharaja forest reserve is the island’s last viable remnant of primary tropical rainforest where over 60% of the trees here are found nowhere else on Earth, supporting a rich web of life that includes rare orchids, amphibians, insects, and flocks of mixed-species birds. The dense canopy, layered understory, and moist microclimates make Sinharaja a haven for studying forest succession, biodiversity conservation, and interdependent life forms in an untouched environment that has remained largely unchanged for millennia.
In the evening, enjoy a nature walk through the forest, enjoying the tropical surrounds and looking out for beasts like jackals, big cats, wild boars and toque monkeys.
DAY 8: SINHARAJA TO KANNELIYA RAINFOREST AND CONTINUE TO GALLE
Enjoy the morning at lesuire before departing for Kanneliya Rainforest in the afternoon. Identified as one of the most biodiverse areas in Southeast Asia this forest was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2004. It supplies nearly the entire freshwater supply for the southern region of Sri Lanka, thus proving its importance as a provider of life. You will hear about and see how the forest contains most of Sri Lanka’s endemic species including 20 of it 26 endemic birds and the critically endangered Giant Navada Tree which is around 600 years old and has gargantuan girth and gait. Plus, the forest is bejewelled by an amazing array of waterfalls including the Anagimala Falls with its impressive cascades and shallow pools.
Later, drive to Galle and check in to the Le Grand Galle, your home for next two nights. The city is the gateway to this beautiful island where culture, stunning golden beaches and history combine to create a masterpiece.
DAY 9: EXPLORE GALLE
Today you will join your tour leader on a walking tour through the best-preserved Dutch town in Sri Lanka, Galle. At its core lies a fort surrounded on three sides by the ocean with a treasure trove of ancient mosques and churches, museums, boutiques and more on its streets. Uncover Galle’s glory as your leader shares tales from its past through to the present day.
DAY 10: GALLE TO COLOMBO VIA MAHAUSAKANDA
Today, embark on a journey to Mahausakanda, a lesser-known yet profoundly serene natural haven nestled in Sri Lanka’s lush interior. Located near the borders of the Sinharaja and Kanneliya rainforests, Mahausakanda offers a refreshing escape into a world of dense forest cover, crystal-clear streams, and an abundance of wildlife. This forest reserve has been preserved thanks to the efforts of local villagers and eco-conscious organisations that are working to restore biodiversity and promote sustainable tourism. It is part of a vital forest corridor that connects with larger rainforest systems, supporting endemic flora and fauna.
Afterwards start your journey to Colombo for the last night. There will be a final dinner with the group this evening.
DAY 11: COLOMBO DEPARTURE
Your adventure in Sri Lanka comes to an end this morning. There are no activities planned for this final day and you are free to leave at any time.
